Patialais a city in Punjab, India. It is the state’s fourth biggest city and the administrative centre of the Patiala district. Patiala is built around the Qila Mubarak (the ‘Fortunate Castle’) built by Sidhu Jat leader Ala Singh, who created the royal dynasty of Patiala State in 1763 and is named after.
The city is notable in popular culture for its traditional Patiala shahi hat (a form of headgear), paranda (a tasselled tag for braiding hair), Patiala salwar (a sort of female pants), jutti (a type of footwear), and Patiala peg (a measure of liquor). Patiala is also known as the Royal City of Patiala and the Beautiful City of Patiala.
It is well-connected to the state’s other bordering cities by road, including Ludhiana, Jalandhar, and Amritsar on NH 1 through State Highway no. 8 till Sirhind on NH 1. It is very well connected to Delhi by road (approximately 233 kilometres) and rail. NH 64 (Zirakpur – Patiala – Sangrur – Bhatinda) connects Patiala to Rajpura (on NH 1 and easily accessible from Delhi) and Zirakpur (suburb of Chandigarh). The closest domestic airport is Chandigarh Airport, which is around 62 kilometres from the city. The city bus stand is the primary bus stop in the area, from which you may take buses to all important destinations in the state or adjacent states.
